For the better part of my life, I struggled with perfection. I would even use a ruler to write my letters. I began to experience exhaustion from trying to show my idea of perfect work. I took a pause and began to reevaluate: Creating should be fun. I found this sheet at the creative reuse centre and fell in love with its soft colour and the organic shapes from bleach stains. I’ll admit, this painting took me a while to start. I made a practice painting with the same material and found that I wanted it to show through, that I had to be confident in the colours I placed upon it since it was not ideal to paint over. The first painting was also a complete failure, a term that doesn’t scare me anymore because it taught me how to improve my vision. I suspect the factor of knowing I couldn’t paint over a mistake somehow allowed me to be more confident in my contact with the material. I also let the bleach stains inform my shapes and collaborated with the imperfections of the material. I am inspired by the view of a park from my window, yet allowed myself to work from my imagination. Viewers will recognize this landscape as a dreamscape and find the use of the bedsheet fitting in that way. Regardless of interpretation, this is my love letter to the oasis’s within the city.
